Our Story

Shakespeare South Australia is an eco-theatrical company committed to environmental sustainability, renewal and positive change. Merging Shakespeare's classic text with new ecological performance strategies, we seek to connect audiences with environments to enhance the affective experience of the natural world in uniquely South Australian contexts. We join organisations such as Shakespeare's Globe, the Willow Globe and Shakespeare in Yosemite as proud members of the global EarthShakes Alliance; a world-wide collective committed to theatrical responses to environmental crises.

Founded in 2021, Shakespeare South Australia is the State's newest theatre company, uniting the latest performance ecology directions with traditional Shakespearean 'Original Practice'. Using environmentally-sensitive staging techniques and applying original biophilic performance research, Shakespeare South Australia investigates how Shakespeare's work might more deeply inform our delicate and fraught relationship with nature.

Shakespeare South Australia was created by Adelaide-born Artistic Director Alys Daroy following training and working across the UK and Australia since 2003 in classical theatre. Alys is an actor (English National Theatre and Sunday Times Ian Charleson Award Commendation for Outstanding Performance in a Classical Production) and Shakespeare scholar (Monash-Warwick Alliance PhD Candidate, Australian Government Research Training Program). She is currently co-authoring a book with Professor Paul Prescott (Merced), titled 'Shakespeare, Ecology and Adaptation' for Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare (2022). Botanica Lumina: Twelfth Night draws on Alys' original research into biophilia, Shakespeare and ecology and seeks to connect people, place and environments through Shakespeare's work.
